4 aa · D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂SS-31 (elamipretide) is a Szeto-Schiller peptide — D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂. Its alternating cationic and aromatic residues drive uptake into mitochondria independent of membrane potential, where it associates with cardiolipin and protects cristae structure.
In pre-clinical models it reduces reactive-oxygen production, restores ATP output and limits cytochrome-c release. It is widely used in cardiac, skeletal-muscle, renal and neuro-protection.
